Courtney (00:00):
Hey doctors. I am freaked out by needles, and I was told that I have a small cavity that needs filling, but
I’ve been avoiding going to the dentist because I don’t want to have a shot done. Really. I’d rather be punched in the face instead of getting your needle. Any advice on how to face my fear.
Dr. Travis Stork (00:20):
Well, we asked Courtney to join us today to overcome her fear of needles and to get a cavity filled. She’s back in our procedure room with cosmetic dentist, Dr. Bill Dorfman, who I know was listening intently. As we spoke about sore throats.
Welcome to you both now, Courtney you’re the only person I know who has a fear of needles. Just kidding,
Dr. Dorfman, maybe the worst place to put a needle for people with the fear of needles is in their mouth. So I know you experienced this a lot, but you have some things you can do to ease this, right?
Dr. Bill Dorfman (00:51):
Absolutely. Travis, we have a new scientific device it’s called the dental vibe and this is absolutely
amazing. And what does dental vibe does, is we’re going to go ahead and demonstrate this in a second is
we introduce a very mild kind of vibration that vibration, that stimulus reaches the brain faster than the
pain from the injection and it kind of fakes your brain out. So the brain only thinks you’re getting a
vibration. It doesn’t feel the pain. It basically blocks it out. So I’ll show you on Courtney and Courtney. I
promise you’re not going to feel anything. We place this in. Go ahead and open.
Travis (01:29):
Nice deep breaths Courtney there. Nice
Dr. Bill Dorfman (01:31):
all we’re going to do is we’re going to put just a little bit in here now. As we’re doing this, Courtney doesn’t feel any of that. And the cool thing is, is the sound also adds to a distraction from the injection.
Plus as it vibrates, it’s going to dissipate the anesthesia. So the anesthesia works even faster. Okay.
Dr. Travis Lane Stork (01:52):
I want to hear from Courtney. How was that Courtney? Was that okay?
Courtney (01:57):
Was that even it? I didn’t feel it at all! I thought he was just testing!
Dr. Travis Lane Stork (02:14):
Wow, Courtney is the proof in the pudding, literally smiling. And you just got a shot. Think about that!
Dr. Dorfman, Courtney. Thanks so much for being here today.
Dr. Bill Dorfman (02:09):
Absolutely! Thank you Travis!

Being nervous or afraid to visit the dentist is very common – in fact, it’s so common there’s a name for it: dentophobia. This type of phobia can range from mild to severe, and can cause shortness of breath, elevated heart rate and blood pressure, and other signs of anxiety, such as shaking or a sense of impending doom.
Up to eight percent of Americans avoid seeing the dentist because of anxiety and fear. Although not all of those cases would be classified as dental phobia, a fear of the dentist is a very common issue that can lead to some very serious oral health problems. Let’s examine some of the causes of dental phobia, and what you can do to help your patients address it.
