What happened to this office and dentist? I scheduled an emergency appointment due to significant pain around a tooth that previously had a root canal and has been missing its crown. During the visit, the Dr. Gelman took two single X-rays of the tooth and told me that the root canal itself was fine and that there was nothing wrong with the tooth. He explained that the discomfort I was experiencing was due to gum inflammation. I explained that I was experiencing significant gum pain, and we both saw in my records that I haven’t had a routine cleaning in years, which could have played a part in my discomfort. I also explained that other areas of my gums felt inflamed, and I asked if a medicated oral rinse could be prescribed to help with the inflammation. He said no and to use salt water rinses. When I expressed that I was in pain now, I was told that everything would be addressed at a later appointment (a cleaning and xrays to replace my crown). After he asked whether my insurance was UHC, as my coverage is Medicaid. The dentist then decided that he wanted to do a full set of routine X-rays. Given that my visit was for urgent pain and gum inflammation, the additional X-rays felt unnecessary and unrelated to the reason I came in and instead felt like a way to bill my Medicaid for something while I’m there. At that point, I ended the visit and declined the general xrays, as the matter at hand was dismissed. On my way out the door, Dr. Gelman asked me what I was going to do, and I explained that I was still in significant pain due to my gums and would need to seek care from another dentist he was not offering to help me. His response was “Ok,” without any further explanation or concern. Why ask in the first place? I left the appointment still in pain and now going throw the weekend in discomfort, without relief or a clear plan to address my symptoms. Unfortunately, the lack of empathy, lack of approach to my discomfort as a patient and failure to provide care during an urgent visit made this a very poor experience. I am very disappointed and surprised in the treatment that I received. I guess he wanted to go home because it was a Friday at 4pm. — (UPDATE - Response) Dr. Gelman and Staff, I have reviewed your response. I came in because I believed my crown or the adjacent tooth was causing me pain. After Dr. Gelman confirmed that the tooth was intact and not the source of discomfort, he mentioned that my gums were inflamed. I expressed that my gums were indeed causing me pain and asked for a prescription for a medicated oral rinse. He denied my request and told me to use salt water. As a rational thinker, I understood that the crown would not be replaced that day, and needed to be approved by my insurance provider. My expectation was to receive treatment for the immediate discomfort I was experiencing, which, as we confirmed were my gums. The lack of empathy became clear when I stood up to leave and he asked, “What are you going to do now?” I told him, “I guess I’ll have to go see another dentist because I am in pain, my gums are inflamed,” and he simply looked at me and said, “Okay,” and allowed me to leave still in pain. Only after dismissing my concern about my gums did he suggest doing X-rays, not for my current issue, but to “check my other teeth for cavities,” which was unrelated to the reason I came in and was not an emergency. I hope additional patients do not leave your office in the same discomfort that they arrived with, especially before the weekend when they cannot get another appointment until the following week. Needless to say, I have since seen a new dentist, was prescribed the medicated oral rinse, and am doing perfectly fine now. Take care.

Lack of Transparency and Unauthorized Billing: I underwent a procedure at Dr. Gelman's office that was performed without prior authorization from my insurance company. They were authorized for one procedure, but did something totally unauthorized not once, but twice. As a result, I was billed for services my ins. only covers for 3 yrs. This led to duplicate charges, and unexpected out-of-pocket expenses, as my insurance company denied the claims due to the lack of pre-approval. Despite making payments throughout the treatment, I was later presented with substantial charges for procedures that were neither authorized nor covered. The practice's financial policy, which I signed under the assumption of standard billing practices, was used to enforce these charges, leaving me with limited recourse. I have initiated an appeal through the appropriate channels and am waiting a resolution. However, this experience has highlighted a significant lack of transparency and communication from the dental office. I advise perspective patients to exercise caution and ensure all procedures are thoroughly discussed and authorized by their ins. company before proceeding.
