It means &#8220;guard&#8221; in Greek. A good example of this is the vaccine regiment our children go through and the vaccines that are administered throughout adulthood to avoid certain diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The alternative is to do nothing or very little and risk infection. In some cases, such as the flu, the risk is fairly minimal to healthy individuals; the worst that can happen is a few days of feeling awful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some diseases are deadly, however. A vaccine makes it impossible or at least, extremely implausible, for a recipient to become infected. Not taking the vaccine, though, can result in infection and in some cases, severe health issues, including death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In oral and dental health, a prophylaxis approach means preemptively taking action to avoid disease risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular visits to the dentist,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dietary restrictions to reduce acids in the mouth or the promotion of bacterial growth,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dietary additions to reduce pH levels of saliva and nutrients for good gum, tooth and bone growth,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good oral hygiene,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing issues as they are discovered, not waiting until they become oral emergencies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A prophylactic regimen is anything that helps avoid dental health issues.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"template":"","dental-glossary-categories":[4516,4532,4543],"class_list":["post-54534","dental-glossary","type-dental-glossary","status-publish","hentry","dental-glossary-categories-all","dental-glossary-categories-p","dental-glossary-categories-terms-and-procedures"],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dentalvibe.com\/ko\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/dental-glossary\/54534","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dentalvibe.com\/ko\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/dental-glossary"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dentalvibe.com\/ko\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/dental-glossary"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dentalvibe.com\/ko\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/dentalvibe.com\/ko\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/dental-glossary\/54534\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dentalvibe.com\/ko\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=54534"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"dental-glossary-categories","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dentalvibe.com\/ko\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/dental-glossary-categories?post=54534"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
