Q

Do gums grow back after scaling?

A

Scaling and root planing is typically performed to remove plaque and tartar buildup contributing to gum disease. In gum disease, the gums recede away from teeth due to the buildup of excess bacteria. Gums can tighten around teeth following scaling; however, gum tissue does not regenerate or fully grow back like other tissues such as that in the skin.
