    Natalie K. Provenzano, DDS Bio

I have wanted to be a dentist since I was eight years old. I love getting to know my patients and their families, restoring patientsā€™ mouths to health and creating beautiful smiles. I take pride in the individual time I set aside for my patients, my gentle technique and the high quality of materials that I use. I have been practicing dentistry since 2002.

I spent my undergraduate years at Loyola Marymount University, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Biology. I was a proud member of Ignatians Service Organization and Delta Gamma Fraternity, holding several leadership roles during my years of involvement. I am initiated into Order of Omega, a leadership honor society for members of Greek Organizations. During my junior year, I was selected to become a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Honor Society of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, considered the highest honor awarded on a Jesuit campus.

For the next 4 years, I called the University of Southern California home as I earned my dental degree. I served on Student Council as a member of the schoolā€™s Ethics Committee, and was chosen to be a member of the elite Oral Sedation Team. I was initiated into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the National Dental Honor Society, recognizing ā€œdental students who have distinguished themselves by excellence in scholarship, while demonstrating exemplary traits of character.ā€ I graduated from USC Dental School in 2002 in the top 10 of my class. Upon graduation, my professors chose me to receive the American Association of Women Dentistā€™s ā€œFemale Dentist of the Yearā€ Award.

I am happily married to my college sweetheart and best friend, Jeff. We are blessed to have 3 children: Zander (16), Josh (14) and Makenzie (12).

How to ease dental phobia and needle fears

Being nervous or afraid to visit the dentist is very common ā€“ in fact, itā€™s so common thereā€™s a name for it: dentophobia. This type of phobia can range from mild to severe, and can cause shortness of breath, elevated heart rate and blood pressure, and other signs of anxiety, such as shaking or a sense of impending doom.

Causes of dental phobia and how to help your patients

Up to eight percent of Americans avoid seeing the dentist because of anxiety and fear. Although not all of those cases would be classified as dental phobia, a fear of the dentist is a very common issue that can lead to some very serious oral health problems. Letā€™s examine some of the causes of dental phobia, and what you can do to help your patients address it.
